Fueling Progress: The State of American Energy

Last month, the American Petroleum Institute released their annual State of American Energy Report. The report shares stories of the positive effects of an American energy revival. Communities and families are feeling the benefits of economic growth driven by the U.S. natural gas and oil industry, including infrastructure investments and low energy prices. American energy has led a resurgence in economic activity across much of the country — activity fueled by lower energy costs. Communities large and small are thriving as businesses can afford to invest and grow.

The domestic energy revolution in the U.S. is responsible for much of this progress.

We believe American leadership in energy comes with a responsibility to look to the future. By investing in new technologies and developing state-of-the-art standards, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions are at their lowest levels in a generation. And this was accomplished while becoming the world’s leading producer and a net exporter of energy. The energy industry has stepped up by supporting technologies that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, investing $108 billion between 2000-2016.

These technology investments have led to real progress on emission reductions. America is leading on this front too — no other nation has reduced emissions as much as we have, and we will continue to step up to this task. As global emissions continue to rise, U.S. carbon dioxide emission levels are at their lowest in a generation. Our dedication to reductions is clearly shown through our results.

The climate challenge before us is considerable, and it demands attention, focus, and innovation from everyone, and our industry will continue to advance environmental progress by lowering emissions and increasing efficiency.

As a company we are contributing to the solution. We’ve had a climate change position since 2003. Since that time, we’ve also developed a long-term carbon strategy including action plans to voluntarily reduce GHG emissions and set an emissions intensity reduction target to further drive emissions reductions across the company.

From the solutions we’re working on as an industry, to the specific targets we have at ConocoPhillips, the U.S. natural gas and oil industry is focused on our ability to deliver cleaner energy at affordable prices. And we will continue to lead on multiple fronts to protect the environment and support U.S. communities, while delivering the energy to power civilization.

It is an election year, and that means each and every one of us has a voice through our vote. Power in Cooperation remains a resource to provide information on energy issues, and we look forward to connecting with you on our Facebook page.
